What is a Block Explorer?

Learn what a block explorer is and how to use one. Understand how to look up transactions, blocks, and addresses on any blockchain.

What is a Block Explorer?

A block explorer is a web-based tool that lets you search, browse, and analyze data on a blockchain. It's like a search engine for blockchain data -- you can look up any transaction, block, or wallet address to see what happened on-chain.

What Can You Do with a Block Explorer?

  • Look up transactions: Enter a transaction hash to see its status (success/failed), the sender, receiver, amount transferred, gas fees paid, and more.
  • Browse blocks: View the contents of any block, including all the transactions it contains and when it was mined.
  • Check addresses: See the balance and transaction history of any wallet address.
  • Track tokens: View ERC-20 token transfers, contract interactions, and token holder information.
  • Monitor gas prices: Check current gas fees to time your transactions for lower costs.

How to Use Omniscanner

  1. Search by block number: Type a block number in the search bar to jump directly to that block's detail page.
  2. Search by transaction hash: Paste a transaction hash (0x...) to view the full transaction details.
  3. Search by address: Enter a wallet or contract address to see its activity.
  4. Switch networks: Use the network selector in the top-right corner to explore different blockchains.

Why Omniscanner is Different

Most block explorers only support one chain (Etherscan for Ethereum, Solscan for Solana). Omniscanner supports 147+ blockchains in a single interface, including:

  • EVM chains (Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, etc.)
  • Solana (SVM)
  • Bitcoin and UTXO chains
  • Cosmos SDK chains
  • Substrate/Polkadot chains
  • And many more

This means you can explore any supported blockchain without switching between different websites.
